Teeth are crowded for several reasons. When permanent teeth are erupting into the mouth and there is insufficient space, these teeth are guided to erupt in front or behind the neighboring teeth. These teeth may also become overlapped, twisted, angled and may sit higher or lower than ideal. The teeth may become more crowded as time goes on. Crowded teeth may make it more difficult to brush, floss and to maintain proper oral hygiene. An overbite refers to the overlapping appearance of the front teeth. A larger overbite may occur if the upper front teeth have moved down further than ideal or the lower front teeth have erupted higher than ideal. Deeper bites may contribute to wearing down of teeth, jaw pain and joint problems. The lower teeth usually fit inside the upper teeth when the jaw closes. When lower teeth are sitting outside the upper teeth, this would be classified as a crossbite. Crossbites may contribute to teeth wearing down, fracturing or chipping of teeth and may cause notches or loss of tooth structure near the gumline. They may also lead to gum recession and bone loss. Gaps or spaces between teeth occur when two teeth are not touching side by side. These gaps may cause food, plaque, and bacteria to collect, gum tenderness and if not cleaned properly may contribute to gum disease. Ideally, no spaces between teeth or spaces large enough to clean would be most beneficial. When the upper and lower front teeth don't touch when your mouth is closed, this is classified as an open bite. Having crooked teeth is described as teeth that are not aligned properly. These teeth may be twisted, turned and positioned out of proper arch alignment.
